7COCO BY PIXAR: FACTS ABOUT THE MOVIE OF THE YEAR
/
Once again, Pixar showed how its narrative and visual splendors are the best formula in today’s cinema. Coco spins around Miguel, a boy who dreams of becoming a famous musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz, despite the unfair ban on music for some generations in his family. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel and his faithful dog, Dante, find themselves in the impressive and colorful Land of the Dead as a result of a mysterious chain of events.

7Coco by Pixar is a reminder of how these little fellas are the man’s best friend and not just pets. In this movie you can see the close relationship, loyalty, and companionship dogs have with humans, but also how they share a spiritual connection between each other. In the Land of the Dead, according to the movie and inspired by the mexican traditions, our pets become “alebrijes”, spiritual guides that are ready to protect us and take care of us.

Coco is a pleasing story about family and a well-crafted tale immersed beautifully in the traditions of Mexico’s Day of the Dead. From the offerings where family photos pay tribute to loved ones gone (whose souls remain alive in this parallel land, as long as they are remembered by the living) to the shiny-orange marigold petals that help as a bridge between the two worlds, Pixar’s graphic arts department makes stunning use of the holiday’s signature elements.

The film does not bear the name of the protagonist. The name Coco belongs to Miguel’s great grandmother, an old and adorable lady who is on a wheelchair. Although Coco has trouble hearing what he says, Miguel feels a deep connection with her. No matter how old his great grandmother is, he tells her about his adventures and plays with her as if she was his best friend. Coco of course plays a very relevant role in this movie, but we don’t want to spoil it!

Pixar is hoping to make this film really personal and culturally authentic. It brought in a cultural trust made up of Chicano artist Lalo Alcaraz, playwright Octavio Solis and Mexican Heritage Corp CEO Marcela Davison Aviles. It’s also written by Pixar’s Adrian Molina, who was upgraded to co-director this year. And, finally, it has an all Latino cast. Have you watched it yet? And if so, did you like it?
